What is Search Engine Optimisation?

Search Engine Optimisation, or SEO, is making sure your website is optimised to be listed as high as possible in the organic search engine results pages.

Organic results are search results that appear without paid advertising. They are there on their own merit!

Your website should adheres to good practices as laid out by the major search engines, in particular Google, who have even provided a guide on the subject.

Search engines want to serve high quality, relevant content to their customers. They want pages that load fast and are mobile friendly.

Over 60% of web searches now take place on a mobile device!

How is this achieved?

There are many facets to search engine optimisation, way to many to list here. SEO can be broken into two key areas: on-page SEO and off-page SEO.

Some key areas covered are:

  • Make sure your website has a mobile first design.
  • Pages load fast, even on slower networks
  • “Meta” descriptions are relevant for every web page
  • Images are optimised for quality, file size and have information embedded to provide information to screen readers (‘alt’ tags)
  • High quality and relevant backlinks. Backlinks are other websites that link to your website

 On-page SEO

On-page search engine optimisation is about making sure your website is setup in accordance to good practice guidelines set out by the search engines.

Google have even provide a PDF informing webmasters of what it would like to see implemented to provide good SEO.

Off-page SEO

Off-page search engine optimisation is when external websites provide a link to your website.

These are called ‘backlinks’.

Typically, this would be an article written about your business or a product you offer. In the article there would be a link from that website to your website.

Backlinks from ‘authoritative’ websites are one of the most powerful way of improving your own website rankings.

Care is required though!

If you have a lot of backlinks from spammy (yes, that’s an official term) website or websites that have little if anything to do with what you offer, then this might have a negative impact on your SEO.
